The Indiana State Treatment Needs Assessment Project,
sponsored by The Indiana Family and Social Services
Administrations Division of Mental Health and Addiction, conducted
a telephone survey of 6,000 adult residents of Indiana to addresses
alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. The purpose of the information
collected is to help the State identify the need for various health
services, including treatment for substance abuse and dependency. The
information consists of prevalence estimates of tobacco, alcohol and
illicit drug use among different gender and age groups at the
county level in Indiana. The extrapolation of prevalence estimates
took into account counties with higher than average proportions of
minority residents (e.g. Marion County), thereby minimizing estimation bias.
The survey was developed in collaboration with the US Department of
Health and Human Services Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.
The Center for Survey Research of Bloomington, Indiana conducted the
survey between April and August 2003. The survey response items can
be viewed at this link.
Alcohol and drug abuse and dependence were defined according to
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders, 4th Edition (DSM-IV).
