Alcohol, Drugs and Weapons Expulsion/Suspension and Dropout Data

All public kindergarten through twelfth grade schools are required to report annually to the Indiana Department of Education (DOE) the number of out-of- school student expulsions and suspensions due to involvement with alcohol, drugs, or weapons. Furthermore, each school must report the number of students who drop out during the school year.

Expulsions and suspensions due to involvement with alcohol, drugs or weapons are presented as a combined total at this website. The DOE defines expulsion and suspension at Indiana code article 8.1, chapter 1 . Grounds for expulsion and suspension, such as possession of firearms can be found at Indiana code article 8.1, chapter 5.1 . Dropout refers to a student who left the school without graduating. Detailed definition of dropout can be found at DOE website.

These school data were retrieved at the individual school level from DOE websites on February 25 , 2004 (expulsion/suspension, dropout) and aggregated by county for use on this website.
