Based on the 2000 Census data the total state population was
6,080,485, of which 2,982,474 were males and 3,098,011 females. The
population by age categories beginning with the 0-17 year age group
was 1,574,396, the 18-24 group had 614,721 people, the 25-34 year
group 831,125 people, the 35-44 group 960,703, the 45-64 group
1,346,709, and the 65 and over age group had 752,831 members. The
population by race in 2000 was 5,320,022 Whites, 510,034 Blacks or
African Americans, 15,815 American Indian or Alaskan Natives, 59,126
Asians, and 2,005 Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders. Of the
214,536 people with Hispanic or Latino ethnicity, 153,042 were
Mexican, 19,678 were Puerto Rican, 2,754 were Cuban and 39,062 were
other Hispanic or Latino. The population of Whites without Hispanic
or Latino ethnicity was 5,219,373.
